Deep Water Hap
Placidochromis electra
The Deep water hap, gets its name from where it is found, a haplichromis that inhabits sandy bottomed deep waters of Lake Malawi in Africa.
The Deep water hap requires a tank of at least 300 litres or more with plenty of rocks for territories and a sand substrate. It is a moderately aggressive fish and should be housed with similarly aggressive tank mates from Malawi. It will become more aggressive when spawning, protecting its territory from anyone that threatens it; it is not suitable for a community setup.
The Deep water hap will accept flake foods but vegetarian supplements like algae and Nori, and meaty foods like blood worm and brine shrimp should be offered to ensure a healthy diet.
Deep water haps can be bred in the home aquarium. They are mouth brooders with the female carrying the fry for around 3 weeks. The female may get harassed by the male after spawning; the mother usually takes good care of the young.
