Electric Blue Johanni
Melanochromis johannii
The Electric Blue Johanni gets its name for the intense shiny blue contrasting colours on its body. It is found amongst rocky areas of Lake Malawi in Africa.
The Johanni requires a tank of at least 300 litres or more with plenty of rocks for territories, robust plants and a gravel substrate for them to build a nest in. The Johanni is one of the most territorial of all Malawi's so it is best to keep them in a large group to reduce aggression; it is not suitable for a community setup.
The Johanni will accept flake foods but vegetarian supplements like algae and Nori should be offered to ensure a healthy diet. Meaty foods will cause bloating in the fish
Electric Blue Johanni's cichlids can be bred in the home aquarium. They are mouth brooders with the female carrying the fry for around 2 - 3 weeks.
