Red Empress Cichlid
Protomelas taeniolatus
The Red Empress Cichlid is a stunning fish from Lake Malawi in Africa. The males turn a vibrant red colour, while the females and juveniles tend to be more drab.
The Red Empress Cichlid requires a tank of at least 400 litres or more with plenty of rocks for territories and a shallow gravel substrate; they also need a lot of swimming space so a large tank is recommended. The Red Empress is a territorial fish and as such should only be housed with other equally aggressive larger African cichlids; it is not suitable for a community setup
The Red Empress will accept flake foods, but some vegetarian matter like nori or algae wafers should be offered to ensure a healthy diet. Do not feed meaty preparations as these can cause bloating
Red Empress Cichlid can be bred in the home aquarium. They are mouth brooders with the female carrying the fry for around 3 - 4 weeks.
