Buttikoferi Cichlid

Tilapia butterkofferi

The Buttikoferi Cichlid is a river fish from western Africa. The tilapia is a peaceful juvenile fish, but as it grows it can become more territorial.

The Buttikoferi Cichlid requires a tank of at least 240 litres or more with plenty of rocks for territories and a gravel substrate planted with hardy plants, as with most cichlids, they are prolific redecorators and will arrange plants how they see fit. The tilapia will become aggressive towards smaller fish, so they should be kept with similar-sized fish, or in a species tank.

The Buttikoferi Cichlid will accept a variety of meaty and vegetarian foods. Live foods like brine shrimp should be offered sporadically. A quality flake and tablet food containing vegetable matter should also be included in their diet.

The Buttikoferi can be bred in the home aquarium. They are substrate spawners, digging a hole in which to lay eggs. During spawning time, the pair will become aggressive towards any fish in their territory
