Albino Convict Cichlid

Archocentrus nigrofasciatus

Convict cichlids derive their name from the numerous black stripes running vertically down their grey body, similar to early convict clothing. The fish are small in the cichlid world, but they are aggressive. Do not keep them in a Community tank, ever! They should be kept with other cichlids of equal size, or larger. If you have a convict, expect all your hard work of decorating and arranging plants etc inside the tank to be demolished, as they dig, and ruin plants with gay abandon.

Sometimes known as the rabbits of the fish world, are prolific breeders. They are often the first fish that cichlid keepers spawn to establish spawning requirements and caring for fry for the first time. The fish pair easily, and produce hundreds of eggs in each spawning. Their hardiness makes them an ideal first cichlid.

The fish are naturally omnivorous, and will take pellet and flaked food, but their diet should include blanched lettuce and small pieces of ox-heart. If you really want to treat them, find some earthworms and stand back! Make sure your filtration is up to handling the extra load.

Suggested tank companions: Convicts, Blood red parrots, Severums, Oscars and Fire mouths
