Blue Acara
Aequidens pulcher
These fish make stunning additions to any cichlid tank. Their striking dark purple bars on top of the faded purple body colour, together with the iridescent sheen of the scales ensure this fish is popular with all fishkeepers. The fish love to dig around in the substrate, and therefore generally make more mess than a lot of other fish. Because of this, it may be worth thinking about bigger filters and more frequent or larger water changes.
The fish loves swimming amongst rocks and driftwood. Be sure to keep tabs on what they are eating, as they require more meaty foods. Specialist cichlid flakes or freeze dried foods are good, with earthworms or live brine shrimp providing the best nutrition.
Suggested tank companions: Convicts, Blood red parrots, Severums, Oscars and Fire mouths
