Keyhole Cichlids
Cleithracara maronii
The keyhole cichlid originates from Guyana in South America where it lives in habitats with very clear water. A beige to gray colour, the name originates from the black ‘keyhole’ shaped spot on the flank. If the fish gets stressed, it change colour to a browner hue. The fish is an omnivore, eating both plant and animal matter.
Because there is very little difference between males and females of the species, sexing them is difficult. Males tend to develop a larger hump on their head than the females. In order to breed the fish, one male should be kept with each female in a well planted tank with driftwood and rocks for cover. The fish will tolerate fish of the same species and other species in larger tanks and is a good addition to any community tank. The fish will eat pellets, flakes and live or frozen foods.
Suggested tank companions: Convicts, Blood red parrots, Severums, Oscars and Fire mouths
