Texas Cichlid

Herichthys carpinte

The Texas Cichlid is one of the most popular New World Cichlids for sale. It is a beautiful fish, with a light grey body, and there are often two large black spots, on the flank and one on the tail. The whole of the fish is covered in bright, almost iridescent spots. For aquarists interested in keeping New World Cichlids, it represents the perfect choice. It displays similar behaviour to the rest of the New World Cichlids, males can grow to an impressive 12 inches long.

The fish is commonly found in rivers in Texas, making it the cichlid with the northern-most distribution in the Americas. Unlike many other cichlids, this fish can tolerate temperatures of down to 15 degrees Celsius, but the tank should be kept at around 20-24 degrees. As with other cichlids, it is aggressive and can be territorial and to avoid fights with other fish, provide lots of driftwood, rocks and caves for it to use.

The Green Texas Cichlid is an open breeder that is very prolific. Maturity is attained when males reach approximately 4 inches in length and the female 3 inches. They are egg layers and the larvae hatch 4 days after spawning. They are free-swimming after another 4-6 days and both parents will protect the fry. Juveniles may be susceptible to intestinal diseases.

The Green Texas Cichlid is omnivorous and will eat most prepared and frozen foods including freeze-dried bloodworms, tubifex, and ocean plankton, as well as flake food and Cichlid pellets.
