Tinfoil Barb

Barbus Schwanefeldi

Although the Tinfoil Barb is classified as being easy to keep, it is a large fish and can sometimes reach 25cm in length. Like other Barb species it is an active, schooling fish and it does require a large aquarium, being a very fast swimmer. When they are properly fed, these fish will grow quickly up to a couple of centimetres each month. The Tinfoil Barb has large silvery scales which give it its name, and with age, these are set off by the beautiful orange and red colouring which develops on the caudal and anal fins.

This is one of the least aggressive of the Barb group, and it is generally well behaved in community aquariums, so long as its tank mates are not small enough to eat. Barbs are generally quite easy to keep, but water quality is extremely important and the tank should be crystal clear. Change the water regularly, making sure that the temperature and pH are the same as that in the tank. All Barbs and especially the smaller species are very active and like space to swim around, so are probably best suited to medium to large aquariums. Keep some space free at the front of the tank, with plants and rocks towards the back, and they will reward you with a constantly active display. They will also appreciate a current to swim against, and the addition of a power head filter in the tank will improve their wellbeing.

These fish will eat a wide variety of foods including brine shrimp, tubifex and other live foods, but also flake food and plant matter. When they are growing, they will eat several times a day, and you can supplement their diet with earthworms, chopped heart or liver.

ggested tank companions: Livebearers, Tetras, Danios, Rasboras, Rainbowfish, Barbs, Loaches, Plecos, and scavenger Catfish.
