The Blue Gourami can also be known as the Three Spot Gourami. Although traditionally silvery blue in colour, their colours can change considerably with their moods, as well as during spawning, when they acquire a much deeper blue hue. The Blue Gourami has only two spots, one in the centre of the body, and a second at the beginning of the tail. The eye is actually the third spot that is referred to in the name

Adults reach up to five inches in length, females usually being slightly larger than the males. The scientific name trichopterus, is derived from the Greek words trichias (hairy) and pteron (wing) - referring to their long hair-like pelvic fins

The shape of the dorsal fin, which is long and pointed in males, compared to the females' shorter rounded dorsal, is the primary means to differentiate between the sexes. Because the male can be rather aggressive during spawning, the aquarium habitat should provide ample places for the female to take refuge. When ready to breed, the male builds a bubblenest and then begins to entice the female by swimming back and forth, flaring his fins and raising his tail. When this behavior is noticed, the water level should be reduced to 20 cm, with a temperature of 28C. The male will tend to the eggs and fry, and when the fry are 2-3 days old the male should also be removed. To start the fry off they should be fed on infusoria and moved onto brine shrimp and fine flake as they grow. Water changes should be frequent, especially during the third week, which is when the labyrinth organ develops.

Gourami are omnivore and will eat both algae and meaty based foods. An algae-based flake food, along with freeze-dried bloodworms, tubifex, and brine shrimp will provide these fish with the proper nutrition.

Suggested tank companions: Livebearers, Tetras, Danios, Rasboras, Rainbowfish, Barbs, Loaches, Plecos, and scavenger Catfish.
