Moonlight Gourami

Trichogaste Microlepis

The Moonlight Gourami body is silvery colour with a slightly greenish hue that is not unlike the soft glow of moonlight. The concave slope of the head in the Moonlight Gourami distinguishes it from other Gourami species. They breathe from the surface, known as Labyrinth Fish, so will there for need access to the surface of the tank. Males can be identified by the orange to red coloration of the pelvic fins, as well as the long dorsal fins that ends in a point. In females the pelvic fins are colourless to yellow, and dorsal fins are shorter and rounder

They require a heavily planted tank that is of a least 50 litters with some of the surface covered with floating plants. Darker tanks will show off the Gourami colours more effectively. Tanks should be kept in a relatively quiet area with little noise, with regular water changes and good filtration. Gourami should not be kept with large, aggressive fish, but are compatible with other small peaceful fish as well as fellow Gourami

Gourami build nests known as bubble nests that are bound together by plants. The pair will need to be separated for best results into a breeding tank with the water level set at approximately 20cm, with a temperature of 28C. The male begins the spawning process by carefully preparing a bubble nest. He then begins to court the female under it. This courtship dance is a fascinating display that should not be missed. Spawning culminates in the male wrapping himself around the female. While in this embrace the male turns the female on to her back, which triggers her to release eggs. Up to 2000 eggs may be laid during the spawning, which the male fertilizes as they float up to the nest. In the safety of the bubble nest the eggs incubate for two to three days before hatching.

After spawning the female should be moved to a different tank. The male will tend to the eggs and fry, and when the fry are 2-3 days old the male should also be removed. To start the fry off they should be fed on infusoria and moved onto brine shrimp and fine flake as they grow

Gourami are omnivore and will eat both algae and meaty based foods. An algae-based flake food, along with freeze-dried bloodworms, tubifex, and brine shrimp will provide these fish with the proper nutrition.

Suggested tank companions: Livebearers, Tetras, Danios, Rasboras, Rainbowfish, Barbs, Loaches, Plecos, and scavenger Catfish.
