Pearl Gourami

Trichogaster Leeri

The Pearl Gourami is not only one of the most attractive, but also one of the hardiest and easiest to keep of the gouramis. Like others of it's family the body shape is elongated and laterally compressed. The ventral fins are long and thin, having the appearance of feelers. The mouth is small and upturned. Pearl and brown flecks covering the body give it a mother of pearl appearance, from which is derives it's name. A horizontal black line runs from the mouth to the tail, where it ends in a spot. They breathe from the surface, known as Labyrinth Fish, will there for need access to the surface of the tank.

The pearl Gourami require a heavily planted tank that is of a least 70 litters with some of the surface covered with floating plants that may be used as hiding places. Darker tanks will show off the Gourami colours more effectively. Tanks should be kept in a relatively quiet area with little noise, with regular water changes and good filtration. Gourami should not be kept with large, aggressive fish, they will hide in a corner, begin to loose colour and may refuse to eat if kept with overly aggressive fish. But are compatible with other small peaceful fish of the same temperament as well as fellow Gourami

Adult males are easy to distinguish from the females by their deep red-orange coloration on the throat and breast. Another clue is the dorsal fin which is longer and more pointed on the male than the female. When ready to spawn the female will have a much plumper body than the male. Gourami build nests known as bubble nests that are bound together by plants. The pair will need to be separated for best results into a breeding tank with the water level set at approximately 20cm, with a temperature of 28C. The male will build a bubble nest, after which spawning will take place beneath it. When spawning the male wraps his body around the female who will release hundreds of eggs. After spawning the female should be moved to a different tank. The male will tend to the eggs and fry, and when the fry are 2-3 days old the male should also be removed. To start the fry off they should be fed on infusoria and moved onto brine shrimp and fine flake as they grow

The Pearl Gourami are omnivore and will eat both algae and meaty based foods. An algae-based flake food, along with freeze-dried bloodworms, tubifex, and brine shrimp will provide these fish with the proper nutrition.

Suggested tank companions: Livebearers, Tetras, Danios, Rasboras, Rainbowfish, Barbs, Loaches, Plecos, and scavenger Catfish.
