Pictus Catfish
Pimelodus pictus
The "Pictus cat" is the most popular member of the Pimelodidae catfish for sale, originating in South America. This is a nocturnal fish and will do well in a community aquarium, as long as the other inhabitants are not too small.
The fish are striking members of the catfish family, with a silver body, covered in black spots and network like markings of black lines. There are black stipes on the tail fin and smaller black spots on their heads. They have very thin skin on their heads so sharp rocks should not be placed in the aquarium. They have very long sensory barbells around their mouth, which often sweep back under their bodies as they swim.
The fish are aggressive feeders, and often root around in the gravel looking for food, uprooting plants that happen to be there. They have sharp dorsal spines, and they need to be handled with care to make sure these do not pierce your skin.
Feeding tends to be easy, as the fish will readily accept Tablet food, algal wafers, bloodworm or earthworms.
