Motoro Stingray

Potamotrygon motoro

This is a freshwater ray from South America! Yes, you can keep some stingrays in freshwater. Be warned however, that this is not an easy fish to keep, and it will grow large, so you must have a tank capable of housing a fish that will be over 50cm when grown.

It is a very attractive fish with a brown to tan body covered in dark brown to orange dots all over its dorsal surface. As the fish bury themselves in the substrate, a sand substrate is an absolute necessity. They swim around the whole tank, however, and any ornaments will prove to be obstacles for this fish.

The fish, have very delicate, thin skin on some parts of their body and therefore you should ensure you have a heater guard to prevent them from burning themselves. If you do choose to place driftwood or rocks in the aquarium, you must make sure they are rounded and smooth to prevent the fish injuring itself. In the wild, the fish is a predator, preying on other fish and juveniles of other stingray species.

They wil eat live fish and small pieces of fresh fish in the home aquarium.
