Red Tail Banded Rainbow
Melanotaenia trifasciata
This fish displays deep red fins and a dark black band (which sometimes shimmers with blue hues) that runs horizontally across the fish's lateral line. There is also a purple to blue iridescence throughout the rest of the body. Males develop darker, more vibrant coloring and are much deeper bodied than the females. During mating or flaring behavior, the males will display prominent strips of fluorescent blue, purple, or white along the tops of their heads and backs.
They are peaceful, active swimmers that prefer the middle and top levels of a tank. Colors seem to be best displayed in well planted tanks. As schooling fish, they should be kept in groups.
Their diet should include some vegetable matter and they seem to have a liking of live foods. They relish meaty foods such as bloodworms
Due to this specie's ability to mate with other rainbow fish, care must be taken to preserve the purity of this species. If several rainbow fish species are to be kept together, the aquarist should be certain that the resultant offspring are not sold or given back to the pet store or other hobbyists. The gene pool of this beautiful fish could be threatened otherwise.
