Cowfish Longhorn
Lactoria cornuta
The Longhorn Cowfish is one of the cutest fish as a juvenile making it popular in the aquarist trade. Best kept singularly as it will fight with other longhorns. The longhorn can release toxins into the tank when stressed, these toxins are lethal to other tank members. This is a rare occurrence and most people will have longhorns for 10+ years without problems. Should this occur however remove the fish or what is stressing it and be prepared to do large frequent water changes.
It requires a tank of 600 litres or larger when fully grown with plenty of hiding places to help it acclimatize. The Longhorn isn't reef compatible as it will eat ornamental shrimps and crabs. They usually adapt to prepared foods, but benefit from being fed fresh fish meat.
