Porcupine Puffer

Diodon holocanthus

The Porcupine Puffer is one of the more unique puffers in the trade as it is covered in spiny needles this can make it difficult to transfer from tank to tank. The porcupine can be kept in pairs or groups with little quaralling.

It requires a tank of 300 litres or larger with plenty of hiding places to help it acclimatize. The Porcupine Puffer isn't reef compatible as it will eat ornamental shrimps and crabs. They usually adapt to prepared foods, but benefit from being fed fresh fish meat. The porcupine puffer will become a very tame fish in time, recognizing its owner and spitting water at them top beg for food. It is possible to hand feed this fish but it can cause quite a painful bite if it misses
