Freshwater Clam
Margaritiferidae sp.
The Freshwater Clam is indigenous to temperate freshwater rivers and lakes across the world, and this species originates in Asia. The shell is brown and black banded, and only attains a total length of 2" in the home aquarium. After being acclimated, the Freshwater Clam will typically burrow itself in the substrate. These clams are excellent filter feeders, which will help reduce the level of nitrates within the aquarium.
Provide an aquarium of at least 50 litres, with a medium sized substrate or finer. These clams will dig themselves into the substrate in order to protect themselves against any potential predators. Do not house these clams with invertebrate eating fish, such as puffers.
The Freshwater Clam obtains its nutrition from filtering food and detritus from the water column. Their diet can be supplemented with a quality invertebrate food. They will not tolerate any levels of copper within the aquarium. If treating the aquarium with copper, remove the clams to another aquarium, and do not return them until the copper has been removed with chemical filtration.
