Sand Sifting Sea Star

Astropecten polycanthus

The Sand Sifting Sea Star is perhaps the best creature for turning over a sand bed, it will wonder about the sand and then bury itself. Only one should be housed per aquarium due to their feeding habits.

It requires a tank of 400 litres or larger with plenty of rockwork and a sand bed to feed from. The sand star is reef compatible and will eat; brittle stars, worms, snails, sea cucumbers and smaller sand dwelling organisms. The sand sifting stars are sensitive to aquarium conditions, and won't tolerate big fluctuations in sg, pH and O2. due to this weakness they should be drip acclimatized over an hour
